The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Through the Forest

Author's Note: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain inspired me to create this piece.  Tom Sawyer is a boy that has a huge imagination and will do anything for an adventure.  Normally when I respond to literature, I create an essay, but this time I wanted to try and create a fictional narrative.  This was based off of a real life adventure with my friends and I exploring the woods.  In this piece I am trying to create better imagery and work on different semantic and syntactic devices such as exaggeration, onomatopoeias,  and repetitive patterns.

The only thing between us and the forest was a fence--a short wooden fence with an opening specifically for people like us that were longing to enter.  This was the first time we have ever been through.  We began to walk through, carefully observing the path so we'd know which way to go.

Pushing the low branches out of our way, avoiding the piles of mud blocking the path, leaping on the random rocks along the grassy path.  Ignoring the irritating mosquito bites and pesky bees buzzing above our heads.  We stop in the middle.  The light of the sun shines down on us making the open area of grass so warm; it is almost unbearable in the summer weather.

As we decide which path to go through, we turn around seeing that there are billions of paths to choose from.  A twig snaps on the ground and we spin the direct it came from.  We stared at each other for a moment, sharing the same thought.  The three of us charged in the other direction.  Ducking behind the trees and bushes, we peek through the open spaces.  Bark!  A black dog was on the other side.   Guarding the only open exit we knew of.  We split up looking for other ways to get out of the forest.

My friend called to us from the other end and we dashed to meet up with her.  Together we ran to the pond that was so dried up that the only thing in it was dried, yellow grass that stood up so high that it nearly passed your waist.  Safe and relieved we lay down so no one could see us.

I hear the crickets chirp and the frogs croak.  The sun blinds our eyes.  Relaxation and serenity fills the air.  These are the times I miss.  Where no one cares that you are acting like wild animals.  Where we all sit there together and laugh.

Author's Note: Imagination is a key component to Tom Sawyer; that is what this piece is all about.  I didn't want to write an essay like I normally do so instead I created this poem.  In this piece I tried to include some of Tom's adventures from the book.

Imagination

A normal day it will begin,
As imagination within,
Is drawn by the thoughts inside you,
Your wildest dreams will come true.

Your happily every after,
A life without a disaster,
Days and days of nothing but fun,
Time to relax for everyone.

Pirate adventures on the shore,
Sitting on the cave's dirty floor,
Striking battles of victory,
Finding treasure for all to see.

Exploring the graveyards at night,
Secrets that will send you in fright,
Sailing the waters with your friends,
Traveling past the river bends.

Holding the key to your own thoughts,
Filling in the incomplete spots,
A life of your own creation,
Unlocking imagination.
