Poetry

Author's Note: I wanted to write a poem today, because I haven't written one in a while.  This piece is about what I do -- what I live to do.  The format of this poem is different from my other poems.  My inspiration for this piece was events that took place the last few weeks.

Me
A brush or a stroke,
Of color so bright,
Self expression,
I paint.

Giving happiness,
Across our faces,
Friendly gestures,
I smile.

Breaking the surface,
Gliding to the end,
Splashing around,
I swim.

One step at a time,
Fulfilling one's dream,
Lending a hand,
I help.

Sitting and staring,
Thinking to myself,
Just imagine,
I dream.

Author's Note: I normally write narrative poems, but this time I wanted to try something different.  This is an acrostic poem about magic, because neither the topic or the style of poetry has been used by me yet.  Magic came to me because of the movie I saw yesterday was all about magic.

Magic

Making your life seem unreal

Amazing things you thought never existed

Giving you what you've always wanted

Imagination that comes true

Creations of your wildest dreams come to life

Author's Note: Last week, Academy 21 went to the field museum in Chicago.  On the trip I learned many new things about culture, environments, and our world in general.  This is a poem is about one of the many exhibit's that we visited called Evolving Planet.  In this exhibit we learned about the different time periods that led up to today.
Evolving Planet

Where life started as nothing,

Slowly changing to something,

Life created for us all,

A world not known to be small.

What starts as water and land,

Making some flowers and sand,

Animals so hard to find,

Times that were one of a kind.

The time of the dinosaurs,

And the freezing ice age floors,

From limes to pomegranate,

This is our evolving planet.

Author's Note: I went to go see a dance performance that reflected the story of David through his heartbeat.  This was the first ballet I have ever seen.  In this piece, I am sharing my thoughts and emotions from the ballet.  I will create a clear description of the ballet in this poem.

David's Heartbeat

Every leap and twirl,
A graceful, beautiful girl,
That shines her own spotlight,
She makes the stage so bright.

Gleeful smiles that shine,
A warm glow, sweet and kind,
Brilliant and loving,
Yet confidence that sings.

Through adventurous fights,
Is a world that unites,
In the taps of their feet,
It is David's Heartbeat.

Author's Note: I was thinking about how everything in so expensive these days.  When you look at it in a different way, people are paying with cotton paper stamped with ink.  This limerick is to share how you can look at money in a humorous way.

Green or Trees

Some people are spoiled so rotton,
Their pockets exploding with cotton,
But they are just made out of trees,
The ink is on for guarantees,
Sometimes that info is forgotten.

Author's Note: I was looking at a poetry book with so many different types of poems.  Then, I realized that riddles were my favorite types of poems.  This is the first riddle I have ever written; I wanted to challenge myself with poetry so this is my riddle.

There is one thing that I love to do,
I can go to the park or the zoo,
Without taking a step out of the door,
Just sitting there for me to explore,
Only the thoughts that float in my mind,
Something for me to search for or find,
Bored throughout the day or in my sleep,
Those are the times my mind starts to leap,
Submerged in the clouds where my head goes,
Ideas that tingle from head to toes,
The task is as simple as breathing,
No guilty feelings to be heaving.

Author's Note: I was day dreaming and I was thinking about the world, not as it is but as I would like it to be.  In this poem I will try to rhyme every other line.  This poem will show how I think life and the world to be like.

My World

A world with blue skies,
Where the grass is full and green,
Majestic butterflies,
Somethings I wish I'd seen.

Love, peace, and joy,
No violence and brutal war,
Lives not to destroy,
No hearts that tore.

Kindness and honesty,
Forgiveness and pride,
Days without poverty,
No people that hide.

Never afraid to dream,
Thoughts always swirled,
Life's brightest beam,
This is my world.

Author's Note: I recently watched a tragedy movie that end sadly.  In this poem I will write about the feeling of loss that happened in the movie.  This poem will show the tragedy in life, but also good things that come out of it.

In My Heart

Fighting through the feeling inside,
The last five minutes of life begin,
Every second takes part in forever,
Where ever the wind may blow.

The last good-byes to the ones you love,
And the last of what you knew,
Life is a battlefield of hopes,
And dreams lived every day.

Now is the time where you know,
Time has told you to leave,
No matter your place in fate,
You will remain in my heart.

Author's Note: This piece is a narrative poem about someone who works hard to follow their dream.  My inspiration was a piece that my friend wrote and a movie that I saw that portrayed the same idea.  In this piece I will try to have as much voice as possible.

My Time
I've worked hard all my life,
Just to pursue my dreams,
Giving up is not an option,
Now is my time.

The many obstacles I have overcome,
I am finally here and I know,
Victory is within reach,
Now is my time.

My future depends on my actions,
I have made my decision,
It's my very own to call,
Now is my time.

Author's Note: This piece got is inspiration from my friend that showed me the rewards of hard work.  This piece is going to be a narrative, because it helps me share my thoughts without worrying about.

My Life and My Dreams

Working hard to get what I earned,
Following my life through its stream,
Using everything I learned,
As difficult as things may seem,
My life has finally turned,
I am following my dream.

Author's Note: I haven't written many poems lately, so I decided to write a narrative poem today.  My inspiration came from a story my best friend wrote; it showed that anything is possible.

Possibilities
My imagination of endless possibilities,
Thoughts and dreams spark in my mind,
Ideas that suddenly burst into action,
When everything comes alive,
Hopes grow high as I am almost there,
Choosing the decision with my heart.

Author's Note: I haven't written a poem in a long time, so I'm going to create a diamante poem using what I learned about symbolism.  My main subjects will be the colors blue and yellow because their meanings are opposites in my opinion.   Did you know that diamante means diamond?

Yellow
Hopeful, joyous
Shining, gleaming, rising
Sun, star, sky, rain
Sitting, sleeping, failing
Calm, gloomy
Blue

Author's Note: I wrote this piece, because as I looked at all the pictures on my desk, I realize that each one took me back to the time that it was taken.  Remembering all those great times made me feel happy and proud inside.  Then I asked myself, what would it be like if I didn't have those memories to keep.  So this is a free verse poem I wrote to explain what memories are.  Another reason I wrote this was to practice writing poetry because I'm not really used to writing them.

Remembrance

Frames, books, trinkets of all kind,
Each holds the adventures you had,
You think back to this memory's time,
And remember the experience,
Joyful or depressing,
It doesn't matter,
The symbol of something important to you,
They all will make you wonder,
What would life be without the memories to keep?

Author's Note: This haiku was created to help me learn how to write one, because I didn't know how to before.  Another reason I wrote this was to experiment with writing a poem, because poems are one of the things I have trouble creating.

 Waves
Crashing against rocks,
With the shape of letter “C”,
A wall of water.

Author's Note: Last week Academy 21 took a trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum, and one of the exhibits that I found fascinating was Living Oceans.  This narrative is going to explain what that exhibit was like and to help me experiment more with poems.

The Living Oceans

It starts at the top in Sunlight,
Full of fish so harmless and minute.
Moving deeper into Twilight,
Many more fish larger than a flute.

The Midnight Zone is below,
Where the dark and eerie fish hide.
Fish of the Abyss will show,
Lights that can act as a guide.

Into the Trenches of cold,
Are the tiny bits of living.
Temperatures fall I was told,
As the sun stops giving.

  1. Well, I love haiku. I would suggest a deeper look into the whole purpose and historical use of haiku as an art form if you wish to continue writing in this format. There are real reasons haiku exists, and if you are aware of those, the composition of haiku will have more meaning.

  4. Your author's notes are really quite something. The level of awareness that you show towards your own need for growth, and the skills you are trying to employ, really reflect the level of writer you are at. Well done.

  5. In response to "My Time": I enjoyed this poem very much. The repetition in the last line is effective, and brings together a real discipline to the writing. The voice is strong, and the word choice also gets he job done, but I think that is where there is room for improvement or growth.

  6. In response to In My Heart: You know, this poem has a really different feel to it in comparison to the other poems you've written. I think in the author's note you speaking to the motivation is pretty interesting, but don't forget that you want to solidify the act of writing; that is, build your self-awareness of what exactly you are trying to accomplish with every piece. So if I had to ask you, what was it as a writing piece, as a poem, that you were trying to accomplish?

  8. Wow Tien you have a gift of writing and I hope you know it.I love your response on the David's heartbeat show and how you made it into a poem. I think if someone read this, that did not go to this performance they would definitely see the picture in their head.

  9. In response to the poems up to David's Heartbeat: I love how you are researching and looking for inspiration in poetry. Please keep that up. That is how real writers operate. I would say critically that you should look to controlling the cadence of the poetry, counting syllables per line to establish a pattern if you are choosing to write in closed form. Beautiful work. Keep it up!

  11. Your (what should I call it...?) "I" piece was phenomenal! I love the way you included everything that you do in life and make it so much more meaningful, as if each thing you do IN life is a LIFE itself-- if you get me there... :)
As last year you were one of my challengers to make me write a happy piece, I challenge you to write a sad piece. *No dreaming allowed!* Hahaha....
Good luck and keep up the great work!
